How can I remove microphone noise in Audacity?

I have some podcasts i downloaded that contain a lot of noise from the microphone, as if the speaker were blowing into it or talking to loudly into the mic. Is there any way to remove this very annoying sound in audacity (or with another mac application). I am not worried an awful lot about degrading the sound quality, as it is already quite poor. How can I remove microphone noise in Audacity?
Have you tried the noise removal option under the effects menu? I would think that would do just what you're after. How can I remove microphone noise in Audacity?
The noise removal function in Audacity relies on the user being able to isolate a section in the audio of just the noise to be removed.

For example a hiss or hum between words or sections.

If the noise is being generated by the speaker you would not be able to isolate it - it is combined with the content.

Edit:

Just read your additional details so you already know this bit.

The only other alternative I can offer is to use the graphic equalizer function to lessen the effects of the noise.

Once you find the frequency range/s the noise is in you will be able to reduce the level but not completely remove it.

(You'd be surprised at how many so called "professionals" don't know how to use a microphone properly. It's a cross we have to bear.)
