Can you record straight from your instrument to audacity?

I am so confused. I may sound stupid because I'm so un-computer/tech saavy. But can audacity only mix and edit tracks that you've already recorded on something else or can you actually record from your guitar or mic into audacity? If so how? Help is greatly appriciated!Can you record straight from your instrument to audacity?
Yes you can record direct into Audacity.

All you need is the correct adapter plug to fit the mic or line input sockets.

Select the input from the drop down list at the top right of the program.

Microphone for the mic but, depending on the output level of the guitar you may need to select either microphone or line in.

The recording level then needs to be set using the control to the left of the input selection list.
