What do the two different colors represent in the waveform display in Audacity audio software?

In Audacity I notice that the waveform display is two-toned: the inner part of the waveform shows as light blue and the outer parts are dark blue.

Why is this? Does anyone know what the two different colors are supposed to represent? What do the two different colors represent in the waveform display in Audacity audio software?
If the peaks of the waveform are clipped the dark blue part of the waveform is cut off in a straight line at the upper and lower edges of the window.

The pale blue portion still shows the correct waveform without the clipping.
