How do you use Audacity to record audio off of web pages such as youtube?

I previously have used Audacity (with Vista) to record audio tracks off of sites such as youtube. Somehow the settings have changed and instead of just hitting record and having anything that flowed out of my speakers recorded, Audacity says "Error while opening sound device. Please check the input device settings and the project sample rate."

Can someone please give me step by step instructions on how to restore Audacity to its previous useful state?|||The difficulty here is not knowing what the "previous useful state" was.

Check first if the input settings are the same on the list. Top right "stereo mix" or "what you hear" and there is no problem with your sound card.

You could try re-installing the program which should re-set the settings back to default.

Or. Check the settings yourself.

These are my laptop default settings and it works fine.

Input: stereo mix. Don't have what you hear on laptop sound card.

Go to File / Preferences.

On Audio I/O tab it shows installed audio devices. Select the same for playback and record.

On Quality tab:

Default sample rate - 44100 Hz.

Default sample format - 32 bit float.

Real time sample rate converter - Fast sync interpolation.

High quality sample rate converter - High quality sync interpolation.

Real time dither - None.

High quality dither - Triangle.

Hope that's not too confusing but it's the best I can do.|||Here is another one I use regularly to record youtubelike webs, it is very simple and works pretty well.
