I plugged my piano into my computer using a USB cord and it's ready to go. I have Audacity installed. But now that I have Audacity open, I'm not sure what to do next! How do I record myself playing the piano on there? How do I record my piano using Audacity?
You need to setup Audacity to record from the right Source.
Go to Edit, Preferences and then set Recording Device. You should have USB something there.
Then you will probably want to set it Monitor Input using the arrow next to the microphone symbol.
Then press the red Record button.

How do I remix songs & remove the lyrics but retain the tune using Audacity?
So I downloaded this Audacity software, I want to remix songs using it. How can I remix?
I also want to remove the words of a certain song using Audacity, but the tune will retain, how do I do that? How do I remix songs %26amp; remove the lyrics but retain the tune using Audacity?
Check the help files - it's all there..
This is possible only for certain stereo tracks. When the vocals are exactly the same on both stereo channels, you can remove them by “subtracting” one channel from the other. This works for many studio recordings, where the vocal track is mixed exactly in the center. Be aware that bass and drums are usually panned to the center and can be removed or reduced also. Depending on how the track was mixed the vocal may only be reduced, not fully removed.
To do this in Audacity 1.2:
1. Import your stereo file into Audacity.
2. Open the track menu (click the arrow next to the track title), and choose “Split Stereo Track.”
3. Select the lower track (the right channel) by clicking it in the area around the mute/solo buttons.
4. Choose “Invert” from the Effects menu.
5. Using the track menus, change each track to “Mono.”
Press the Play button to hear the results. If you are lucky, the voice will be gone but most of the other instruments will be unaffected, just like a karaoke track. You can use the Export commands in the File menu to save the results.
Audacity 1.3.13:
Has a vocal remover built in. Just select (highlight) the whole track by left clicking an open area on the panel to the left of the waveform then vocal remover from the effect menu. How do I remix songs %26amp; remove the lyrics but retain the tune using Audacity?
You can't do it perfectly, but I've found a few Youtube tutorials:

I think it works pretty badly, but it still sort of works.

How do I convert audacity to an mp3?
I have an audio track I recorded on audacity, and I want to make it a soundtrack on windows movie maker, but it doesn't recognize the file as a soundtrack. It does recognize mp3s, so how do I convert it to that or something else it will recognize? How do I convert audacity to an mp3?
Read the audacity site - there's a link to Lame. How do I convert audacity to an mp3?
You would need the mp3 (Lame) encoder at least then Export the file as mp3. Audacity may have encoder built in already.

How should I burn a CD using audacity?
How should I burn the songs I recorded on a CD using audacity? I can't find any burn button or anything.
No,answers saying "don't use audacity or use something else" or other answers that will not even help. How should I burn a CD using audacity?
Unfortunately, you can't use Audacity to burn songs - it just doesn't have that function built in. Once you've recorded and edited the tracks in Audacity, you should Export them as an uncompressed audio file - usually a WAV file - don't use the "Save" option. Then use a program like Windows Media Player or iTunes to burn the songs to the CD.

Whats the difference between Audacity and Cubase?
Audacity is free.
Cubase and other recording tools are expensive.
Why exactly is this (educated answers only please)Whats the difference between Audacity and Cubase?
Cubase is bad?
Do you work for a competing DAW company or something?
Audacity is aimed more at audio editing with the ability to do multi channel audio mixing and some pitch bend/time warp features along with various plugins, one of which allows audacity to use the commonly used VST audio plugin format.
Audacity is fine if you just want to process audio, mix it together, make mashups etc.
Cubase has been on the go for years, starting off as a midi sequencer then branching out into an audio sequencer as well.
The deal is, cubase is an infinitly more powerful program, aimed at professionals who want a professional sound with as many tools at their disposal as possible. audacity is a relatively capable program in its own right, and considering its free, is a must have for people starting out in the world of sound/music production.
There's really no need to buy cubase unless you have a good understanding of music tech and are serious about getting the best from your productions.
I'd try audacity and if/when you find it limiting, look into considering cubase.Whats the difference between Audacity and Cubase?

I just downloaded Audacity and I'm trying to record an audio track for the first time but everything I say has an echo effect to it. How do I turn this option off?How do I take off the echo effect on Audacity?
The only way I can replicate this is by activating "software playthrough" on the preferences setup.
Go to File / Preferences / Audio I/O tab and make sure there is no tick alongside "software playthrough". Just click to un-check it if ticked.
Why it's there I don't know. I've never found a use for it.
Hope that helps.
If you want to record multiple tracks just check the "play other tracks while recording new one" box.
It's best to use headphones to monitor the previous tracks while recording the new one.

How to record rap song over a beat using Audacity?
Please tell me if you know how to. My friends have a better program but I'd like to use Audacity at my house sometimes. Please helpHow to record rap song over a beat using Audacity?
Sorry, no one uses audacity but this questions been sittin around so I'mma take a shot. So hold on. So, if you have a mic running through an interface to your cpu, you must select an input. Some where you'll have to create a track to record into. Then select the input so than your mic signal is selected. Then you most likely have to put it into "record ready" or "arm" the track. At this point you should be able to hear your voice through the microphone. If you can, you have an issue with the "monitoring" setup. Somewhere in the program you'll have to change it from something like, "signal monitoring" to "INPUT MONITORING". Then you should definitely hear yourself. If all else fails, just go to the audacity website, find the forums that all the audacity users chat on, and someone will be more than happy to help you. Then come back here and give me the best answer. Peace.

How to Use Audacity to make my voice movie trailer material?
I want step by step instruction on how to change my voice to sound movie trailer material in Audacity. and I need it ASAP. My voice is a little high pitched and when i try to lower the pitch it just sounds weird. Please Help. Thanks in advance. And if theres a way to sound like Morgan Freeman please tell me how to to that to. And if Im using the wrong software for this, show me a better one thats free. Thanks! How to Use Audacity to make my voice movie trailer material?
First, you're going to have to go into the bathroom or stand in the shower (good sound qualities) and practice sounding like Morgan Freeman. Lower the register of your voice. Listen to how Morgan Freeman says things. Does he clip his words (cut them off sharply at the end)? Does he slur certain groups of letters? Etc. At least 90% of getting the quality of someone else's voice is training what nature gave you, not expecting miracles from software.
My cousin-in-law was in radio and did voice-over and he naturally speaks very precisely and very clearly. Practice reading out loud. If it feels like your mouth and tongue are doing weird things (moving around too much), you're doing it right;-) Note: while well-read script sounds good on film, TV and radio, it's difficult to listen to someone in person who speaks precisely because they don't slur the letters when they speak. Most of us would say: "ar ya goin' t'thu stor?" but they'll say it perfectly, pronouncing what should be pronounced.
Once you get close to Freeman's tonal qualities, use Audacity to tighten it up. Use the pitch and speed plugin in the Effects menu. When you lower the pitch too much, it makes time changes to the audio so you need a plugin that will also allow you to increase the speed as you lower the pitch.psoriasis treatment

As far as I'm aware iTunes songs are in either aac or m4a format.
Audacity does not support these file types only wav, mp3 or ogg besides it's own multi track format aud.
You will need to convert them.
This app from Koyote Soft will convert aac or m4a to the format of your choice.
I loaded a wrong format song once and if memory serves correct your result is about what I got.

Just in case I'm wrong about the file type you have just Google for a file converter: "freeware ??? to mp3 converter" Don't forget the exclamation marks.

How do I edit a recording of me singing to make it sound professional with Audacity?
So I just recorded a song with me singing to a original song. So I listened to it and it sounded "okay" but I want to edit my voice to make it sound a little more professional.
How can I do this with Audacity? How do I edit a recording of me singing to make it sound professional with Audacity?
There is good, better and best.
With a lot of the freeware (free software), your limited to what you can do as far as effects, levels, add-ons and modules. It will depend on how much you want to spend.
One way to improve the sound without spending a whole lot would be at the Microphone level. Depending on the Mic you have, you may want to look into a pop filter. A pop filter looks like someone put a pantyhose on a small hoop. It's on a gooseneck and goes between you and the Microphone. You could try to make one yourself or pick one up for about 10 to 15 dollars.
Another way to improve your sound is to make sure the cables your using are shielded so your recording comes back clean (no electronic humming noise).
After all that, you'll want to look into getting a multi-track recording software, there are several good ones out there and of course pricing at a wide range as well. In order to suggest what type of software, I'll need to know what type of computer your using and what type of OS you have.
First and foremost, you have got to click that effects tab! Find the "amplifier" plugin and click that. That alone will get your voice at a nice, modern, sound level.
Audacity has the "freeverb/gverb" plugin which, applied in a small amount, makes your voice have a bit more spacial depth to it.
One really cool thing you can do is record yourself singing an octave lower than your previous recording and combine that with the first, which can sound REALLY cool (it works for me!).
You can also open the "equalization" plugin and turn the highs and lows down, just leaving the mids, to get that "am radio/megaphone" sound
hope that helps! How do I edit a recording of me singing to make it sound professional with Audacity?

File...Export as... mp3. This should work if you have the proper converter on your computer. If you don't have it but it doesn't need to be an mp3 file and could just be an audio file export it as a .wav file. If it needs to be an .mp3 save it as a .wav and convert it in iTunes (also free if you don't already have it).

How to slow down my Itunes Songs in Audacity?
I know how to import songs and make them karaoke on Audacity, but when I import any songs from my Itunes, it speeds up the songs and makes me unable to understand whats happening. I don't know how to fix it. Can someone show me or tell me how to?How to slow down my Itunes Songs in Audacity?
Edit Ogg Vorbis, MP3, WAV or AIFF sound files..
The above formats are the only ones Audacity will recognize and play.
A file playing superfast in a few seconds indicates it is the wrong file format and will need to be converted to mp3 to be usable.
I don't have iTunes so I can't recommend a specific converter.

Do you have your speakers on when recording and is it playing the sound as you record? That's probably what's going on.
The effects menu will be grayed out as long as you don't have a recording selected in the main window. After you record something hit Ctrl+A to select all, then you should be able to apply effects.eye shadow

I just purchased a Yamaha PSR-E413 and i have it plugged into the my home computer (not a mac) and im trying to record using audacity. Where do i start? How do you use a keyboard with Audacity?
Assuming you're talking about recording MIDI - Audacity has no MIDI support or features (apart from displaying a MIDI file).
You need to be looking at a more fully-featured program, maybe even a full DAW (digital audio workstation).
Take a look at Reaper, which is very reasonably priced and has plenty of features comparable to much more expensive DAWs...

If you find Reaper limiting and you can spend a bit more, there's plenty of choice!

If not you will need to export and save to wav format or save as mp3 and burn as an audio CD.
Burning as an audio CD automatically converts mp3s to wav format so it will play on any CD player, new or old.
Players older than about 8 - 10 years do not recognize and play mp3s.

How do I convert an mp3 file into a file Audacity can use?
I recently downloaded the program Audacity in order to make a ring tone for my phone via VCAST. I attempted to use an mp3 file, but the program won't allow it. How do I convert an mp3 file, such as the sort used with an iPod, to the sort Audacity uses? How do I convert an mp3 file into a file Audacity can use?
I usually just drag the file into the work area (the 2/3 of the window that is blank when you initially start up Audacity). It works for me..
Since you have iPod then most likely you'd have iTunes software installed on your computer.
I'd suggest converting mp3 to 16bit 44.1 khz audio file (cd quality audio) which then could be read into Audacity without a problem.
Here are instruction to covert with iTunes from their site:

3. From the Import Using pop-up menu, choose the encoding format that you want to convert the song to, then click OK to save the settings.
4. Select one or more songs in your library, then from the Advanced menu, choose one of the following (The menu item changes to show what's selected in your Importing preferences):
* Create WAV version
If you haven't imported some songs into iTunes yet, you can import and convert them at the same time. This will create a converted copy of the file in your iTunes Library based on your iTunes preferences. "
Another program as Media Monkey (free) could also do that format change for you:

Last time I used Audacity, I was playing around with the speed on songs and stuff like that. Now when I actually have to use it for something, it seems those effects still remain every time I import an MP3! How do I set all the effects back to their defaults? If you reloaded a project, then all the stuff you did remains intact. But if you loaded some other file, nothing's been done to it, so no effect should be in place. Thus, what you described doesn't really make sense.

To use MP3 files inside Audacity you need the LAME encoder. You can get this from Audacity's website - http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download鈥?/a>
If you want a good converter then try Super - http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html
The website is a bit annoying as you have to go through three pages of information to get to the download page. Some anti-virus programs give the installer a false positive but it really is a safe file.
OK - let's get this straight - you don't need the Lame codec to play mp3 files on Audacity - only to export to mp3.
You don't need a separate encoder.
Download Lame from here;
http://lame.sourceforge.net/
Unzip and copy the lame_enc.dll into Audacity's main folder.
The first time you export a file to mp3 Audacity will ask for this file.
Browse to it's location, highlight it, click OK and then the file can be saved as an mp3.
This only needs to be done once.

Greetings fellow Audacity user! I still use Audacity audio for my videos. There is free editing software and those you pay money for. Basically they all work the same and use timelines. Do some research and find software you are comfortable with, and this depends on what you actually want to do.

How do you record electric guitar via Audacity?
I heard you need an audio-audio plug? I have an amp chord that i plugged an audio output adapter to so it could plug into the microphone input on the pc, but no sound can be recorded when i try to use audacity?
Do i need an audio-audio plug with an amplifier adapter to record it?
Help? (:How do you record electric guitar via Audacity?
I have a Zoom G2.1u pedal with a USB port that I can connect to my computer. I paid $75 for the Zoom on Ebay and use Audacity and the Cubase software that came with the Zoom pedal to record. Seems to work fine for me. I wasn't exactly sure what you were doing but if you're saying you ran an amp cable directly from your guitar into the microphone input on your computer I'm not too surprised it didn't work. I've been playing guitar for 40 years and am certainly no audio tech, but I think it might work if you a line-out on your amp to run that into the microphone input on the computer. I record all my acoustic stuff through a microphone though and use the Zoom pedal for anything electric. I know those ways both work but am not sure what other options are. There are some folks on here with more audio recording experience, so hopefully they'll reply.

if your doing it from an imported song, it could be very hard, but i'd experiment with the EQ and stuff, you can remove everything that's panned to the center (usually vocals) with the vocal remover. if your recording a band, then i would record the separate instrument one at a time to a click, drums, the bass, then guitar, then vocals, then backing vocals. this way you can treat them separatelymake up tips

How do I take my files from Audacity and put them on my Palm Treo as a ringtone?
I have a Palm Treo 700wx. I just dowloaded Audacity so that I can choose which clip of a song I want to use as a ringtone. The problem I'm having right now is that I cannot figure out how to export the file onto my phone as a ringtone. I did all the editing of the song, all that is complete. All I need now is how to change it into a ringtone and put it onto my phone. Thanks in advance! How do I take my files from Audacity and put them on my Palm Treo as a ringtone?
your treo can play mp3 files. what you need to do is first export the clip to an mp3. to do that you first need to have the lame 3.96.1 encoder for audacity found here: http://www.webhostxpress.net/~mitiok/lam鈥?/a>
extract that to a folder here you wont forget it. open audacity, open the audio project, click on edit%26gt;preferences%26gt;file formats%26gt;find library%26gt;open the lame_enc.dll file that you just extracted. to the left of the find library button is a drop down menu of the available bit rats for your mp3. the lower the number the worse the quality but the less space it uses. 128 is a good compromise of space and quality where 320 is "cd quality". click ok. click on file%26gt;export as mp3%26gt;pick a name to save it as and there you go.
now, to put it onto your treo, you need to link up to your computer using active sync. once that's completed, open windows media player, open the mp3 file, click on the sync tab and make sure your device is selected. now add the now playing file to the sync column and the click start sync. once finished, you need to move the mp3 from the folder you saved it to, to the my documents folder so you can use it as a ringtone.
if you cant use windows media player to do the sync becaus you dont have a memory card in your phone, i think you can cut and paste into the folder when you open My Device in my computer but i'm not really sure about that.
hope that helps! How do I take my files from Audacity and put them on my Palm Treo as a ringtone?

How do you add music into the middle of a recording using audacity?
I want to add msuic into the middle of a recorded audio clip using audacity but cant figure out how.How do you add music into the middle of a recording using audacity?
If you open the recording file, then open import the new material you are ready to begin.
Look at the tools in the up left corner of the screen. The tool with the arrows is the tool for moving a block of sound. Select the music you are adding to the other and move it into p[lace.
Now use the tool that looks like two blue lines... that's the volume envelope... set the volume of the two pieces of sound as you wish, then perform a quick mix...
if it isn't like you want it, undo, and you will go back to the pre-mixed version.
If you want an excellent guide to using audacity, you can get one at learnwebdevelopment.com. Bert Lee is the author.

How Can I Get Rid of Static Noises Using Audacity?
I record using GarageBand and transfer the audio file to Audacity. I use a cord to hook my bass up to my Mac for recording. In GarageBand I hear some static but since it can't get out static, I use Audacity.
Please help. Thanks. How Can I Get Rid of Static Noises Using Audacity?
You might reduce it a bit using the noise removal function or the equalizer but the use of either will affect the other content.
You need to find what's causing the "static".
It's most probably an earthing problem so check all the joints and connections from the guitar to the computer.
Try a different cable.
Check the internal connections of the guitar.
Are you recording the signal loud enough?
The aim with recording any input is to record it at as high a level as possible without distortion.
This even includes a sound or sounds which you know will be barely audible in the final mix.
A track can always be brought down in level but if recorded too low and it needs to be boosted any electronic noise will be boosted also.
As an example, Fenders, although one of the most commonly used recording guitars are also notorious for earthing problems. I've had three Jazz Basses and it was the same with all three. Used a cheap and nasty copy for studio work - perfect.
Have you tried recording with Audacity?
If you still have the same problem the odds are it's pre computer.
All you can do and all I can suggest is trial and error to find the problem.

I have got several songs on Audacity that I absolutely love, but I never listen to them because they are in the wrong format to open in either Windows Media or ITunes. How do I strip the vocals out of an mp3 file using Audacity?
I've got a song that I want to strip the vocals out of, but keep the instrumentals, and I already have Audacity, but any free sound editor will do.How do I strip the vocals out of an mp3 file using Audacity?
Unfortunately there's no magic button that indefinitely removes the vocals from a song, often distortions will be left behind, this is especially so with more modern stereo tracks due to the song being spread over different sound sources. Certain programs like audacity enable you to split the track into different channels. Audacity's own tutorial goes through a number of different processes, i'll summaries them for you, however for a more in depth look, best look at the source site provided.
For songs where the vocals are in the middle and the instrumental parts surround split the stereo track into its left and right channels, make both mono, invert all (or a selected part) of one of them, and play back the result.
If you have an unusual stereo track where the vocals are mixed hard into one channel and everything else hard into the other channel, you can simply split the stereo track into left and right and delete the vocal channel. To split a stereo track in Audacity, click on the downward pointing arrow at the top of the Track Panel (where the mute/solo buttons are ) then on Split stereo track. To delete one of the channels, click the [X] to left of the downward pointing arrow. Finally, click the downward pointing arrow again and choose "Mono".
It can get very complicated and in most circumstances proves highly ineffective, sometimes when bands release a catchy song, they'll also release an instrumental version as well that can be found in special edition albums or around the internet.
Hope that can help at all, maybe if you posted the song you wanted it may be easier for the sound experts to tell you whether its possible without specialist sound tools. How do I strip the vocals out of an mp3 file using Audacity?
You would need something more complex than Audacity.
You would have to use a tool that can "best guess" the vocals, since they don't appear as a separate track in an MP3. And, even then, you might not be able to remove them completely, just quiet them down.

Select the audio you want, go to file, export selection as wav; or export the entire song. Name the file, put it on your desktop. Then open iTunes, and drag the file into your library. What's the difference between Audacity and Protools?
My band and I have been using Audacity for about a year due to lack of money, but now we've got a bit and are considering switching to Protools. However, we're also wondering if it's worth the investment or if we should spend on other music-related items. Which is better and why? What's the difference between Audacity and Protools?
Stick with what you know, which is plain old PLAYING MUSIC. Use Audacity. Spend the money to get in a real studio. Can you record your voice on audacity without a microphone?
I need to record a narrative on audacity for a project and I know very little about the software. Can you record your voice on audacity without a microphone?
As incredible as it sounds, you actually can use a set of headphones for a microphone.
No, you can't.
You need a microphone or some kind of speaking thing that's connected to your computer, laptop, mac etc. Get some sort of headset or something, audacity isn't the best recording software but it's good for beginners or newbies. Good luck bud!

Hey, do you want to record the screen audio? If so I recommend you Camersoft Audio Recorder. it can record any voice of computer. Here it is the download page

The software isn't that important - but you do need some way for the sound you make to be picked up by the computer. For that, you need a microphone of some sort. A gamer headset can have a microphone. Most laptops have microphones. But without an input device, the software doesn't matter.
Once you have the microphone, audacity can record it - as can the Sound recorder utility that's bundled with Windows.
Hardly.
I am tempted to say: "Yes, sure you can, just yell loudly into the screen, and your computer will record it for you, but you probably wont hear anything back".
But, no, you will need a recording hardware attached to the computer. As the other post stated, you can use a set of head phones or earbugs and plug it into the microphone jack, then yell very loudly into the ear pieces while recording, you can even record in stereo if you space the two earpieces apart on both side of your mouth while you yell at them.buy make up

OMG i love to steal music by doing that. Unfortunatley u have to the Sound Blaster Sound Card to do that. It has the "what u hear" feature and as long as you have that sound card as your default device it will work without a sinch. These cards are cheap and its worth the money. You can get them at stores like CompUSA or bestbuy. If you do get post back. For now just go to radioshack and buy an audio splitter. Then feed the audio wire intot the Line -in plug

I have a song and in the song, the trumpets play pretty darned loud. I want to bring the sound of the strings out a lot more so you can hear them better. How can I fix this using Audacity?Audacity: How to reduce the volume of an instrument?
To change the volume, use the mixer toolbar located under the audio control buttons (play, stop, pause, etc.) If you want to create a smooth transition of volume change, use the envelope tool, which is right next to the selection tool (which has an "I" on it).

How to create a instrumental using the acapella and original using Audacity.?
I have a Original song and the perfect acapella of it.
How do I create a instrumental of the song using those two and audacity? How to create a instrumental using the acapella and original using Audacity.?
The only way to create an instrumental is to remove the vocal from the original..
Unfortunately once the track has been mixed down to stereo in the studio the vocal removal method is very hit and miss.
The only way to fully remove a vocal track is with the original multi-track studio recording.
The Audacity method is set out below.
As the success or not of the removal depends on how the track was mixed in the studio and as all vocal removal programs use the same method there is little you can do if not successful other than try a search for an instrumental version.
Vocal removal method.
Audacity 1.3.12:
Has a vocal remover built in. Just select the whole track then vocal remover from the effect menu.

Also even if i do record my voice does anyone know how to alter/change the voice in a good way IN AUDACITY?How do I edit my voice when i record it in Audacity?
Are you recording in multi-track format - that is recording your vocal on a new track while playing the song?.
Are you using a hand held microphone and not an inbuilt laptop mic?
It's not possible to give a specific answer without knowing the above.
Regardless of the audio level in the final mix it is normal recording studio practice to record each track as loud as possible without distortion.
The balance of the levels is adjusted when doing the final mixdown.
There is a selection of effects in Audacity which can be added to vocals but don't overdo it.
To set up for multi-track recording:
Version 1.2 via File menu.
Preferences / Audio I/O tab and check:
"play other tracks while recording new one".
Version 1.3.12 - Edit / Preferences / Recording:
"Playthrough / Overdub / "play other tracks while recording new one".
Import the first track then monitor it while recording subsequent track/s.
It's best to use headphones while doing this to prevent feedback.
make sure the input recording level is turned up enough for you to hear it, but not so much it clips. once you've recorded it, use the equalizer to tweak it to sound better (you can amplify or de-amplify (if thats a word) certain frequencies to better suit your vocal sound), then use the normailzer and tell it to boost it to -0.1dB, then use compression to make the whole thing the same volume =] have fun =]How do I edit my voice when i record it in Audacity?

How can I make myself sound like a barbershop quartet with audacity?
I would like to "solo" a barbershop quartet, anyone knows how I can just sing the song and record it and edit it with audacity so I sound like there's 4 guys singing like in a barbershop quartet?
Greetz 'n blessHow can I make myself sound like a barbershop quartet with audacity?
Yes, you can use Audacity to do multi-track recording. For your purposes, you might mix two tracks for the R channel, and 2 for the Left. Have a good sit-down with the directions, and practice with some simple things first, before you go to the trouble of singing all the 4 parts. Have you head the Kings Singer recording of Spem in Allium? All done with multi-track - 6 guys become and entire multi-part antiphonal choral ensemble. It's called MULTI-TRACK RECORDING and it's been around for maybe 30 or 40 YEARS, so I'm surprised you have never heard of it.

Audacity Program Question - How to encode in different bit rates?
I'm doing a science fair project about MP3 algorithms. I'm basically using Audacity to compress certain WAV files using different bit rates into an MP3. The thing is, I don't know how to encode in different bit rates. How can I encode a WAV file in different bit rates to make a special MP3 file?Audacity Program Question - How to encode in different bit rates?
To compress a wav file to an mp3 file of any bitrate do this. Open audacity. Edit Preferences. Click on file format. Scroll down to mp3. Click on the drop down menu. Choose the bitrate. You will see bitrates ranging from 56k (poor) to 320Mbps (the best).
When you're done, select the track(s) you wish to compress, and click on Export as mp3. The exporting will compress and save the result as an mp3 file.
Because mp3 is a proprietary format, you need an additional free program to do the conversion from wav to mp3. You can download it at http://lame.buanzo.com.ar/
Once you have installed Lame, you're good to go.Audacity Program Question - How to encode in different bit rates?
The bitrate needs to be set by the user before conversion.
If you want to convert to different bitrates it will need to be reset between each conversion.
Once the bitrate is set it effectively becomes the default for all further conversions so for your project it will need to be set multiple times.
Here's how.
Open the wav file.
Go to "file / preferences"
Click the "file formats" tab.
In the mp3 export section make a note of the default bitrate before choosing a new bitrate from the dropdown list and click OK.
Then export the wav file as an mp3.
To keep track name the file with the bitrate you chose.
It will be compressed at the rate of your choice.
You'll need to do this for each for each new compression ratio you choose.
When you've finished reset the bitrate to the original default value.

How can I get internet music loud enough to heard on audacity 1.3 beta?
I've tried recording music off the internet onto audacity. When I go to listen to it, I can barely hear it and I can't hear any of the words. I have my volume as loud as it will get too. So is there something that I can do so I can hear the recorded version of the song.? Thanks. How can I get internet music loud enough to heard on audacity 1.3 beta?
Are you selecting "stereo mix" or "What you hear" from the recording input selection box?.
Alongside that is a recording level control.
If this is set too low the output volume control won't make enough difference.
Should be able to give you 10 points for using "to" and "too" in the correct context.

Can you record straight from your instrument to audacity?
I am so confused. I may sound stupid because I'm so un-computer/tech saavy. But can audacity only mix and edit tracks that you've already recorded on something else or can you actually record from your guitar or mic into audacity? If so how? Help is greatly appriciated! Can you record straight from your instrument to audacity?
Yes you can record direct into Audacity.
All you need is the correct adapter plug to fit the mic or line input sockets.
Select the input from the drop down list at the top right of the program.
Microphone for the mic but, depending on the output level of the guitar you may need to select either microphone or line in.
The recording level then needs to be set using the control to the left of the input selection list.makeup 2009

I have often recorded songs from youtube using audacity. I don't use a microphone it just comes straight through the line or something like that. It used to work fine but suddenly I am finding that when I try and just record 'silence' it is picking up some noise from somewhere that continues to play all the way through the track. This makes the quality really bad. I have tried using the noise removal effect but i can't remove it from through out the track.
Does anybody know how to get rid of this really annoying background noise???Does anybody know how to get rid of background noise on audacity?
Well, you could try recording with Wire Tap Pro (there is a free version) and see if that comes out clean (wire tap is what I have been using). Also, are you using the sound removal correctly? You have to select a section of the recording that has just the sound you want removed, and select sound removal (this tells audacity what you want removed), then select the entire track, and go to sound removal again, that actually removes the sound.

My producer produced me a track which is not loud enough comparing to other songs I listen on my laptop. How can i fix it with audacity. When amplifying the bass makes a lot of noise.
Thank you!How to raise up the volume of my track with audacity?
On the left side of your music track opened in audacity, there are two sliders. The first one is - and + and the other one is L and R. Drag the first slider towards the + sign and you will see a tooltip indicating the Gain in terms of +%26lt;number here%26gt;dB. Then after raising the slider test play the track if the audio level is acceptable, you dont want to over volume it.

when you highlight the sound you want to amplify/ change the volume to, it is already set to the perfect volume, dont change anything. it is better to record things at lower volumes then amplify it so that you dont lose qualityrecipes cream

How Do you take music out of a song using Audacity?
Hi! I'm making a track using different parts of songs for a dance im choreographing. I'm using the program Audacity and want to take the music out of this one clip of a song so it leaves the clip with just the voice. How do i do that? Please make instructions as simple as possible please! How Do you take music out of a song using Audacity?
The instructions are not simple. your best bet is to find an add on that can do this for you, since doing it manually is tricky and often doesn't work well. If you have the background track for the song, then you can subtract it (invert it and play it on another channel). Audacity wasn't designed to do this. How Do you take music out of a song using Audacity?
Try using the notch filter to isolate the voice. You'll have to fiddle with the settings to find out what works best, since the pitch of the voice and how it varies is what the notch filter is keying on. It might be necessary to use several notch filters, applied at different points, to leave most of the voice.
* * * edit * * *
I guess I was thinking of Audition. To construct a notch filter with Audacity, combine a low and high pass filter at the same frequencies, or even with the low frequency above the high frequency. Depending on characteristics of the voice, try the higher settings of rolloff (like 36 and 48 dB). For a male voice, try different frequencies from 100 to 500 or so; for a female, 200 to 2000.How Do you take music out of a song using Audacity?
You're asking for something that's almost as difficult as taking the "wet" out of water. There are programs designed to do that - Audacity, as good as it is for what it was designed for, wasn't.

How do you save whatever you record on the latest Audacity beta?
When I save whatever I recorded on Audacity, it acts as if I never recorded anything and just saves the unmixed tracks together. I hit record, the tracks begin playing, and I put them on solos, mute, etc, until its over, then when I save it as a project it acts as if I never used solos or mute. I've heard to click export as WAV, MP3, or whatever, but that option doesn't show up.How do you save whatever you record on the latest Audacity beta?

Can you transfer songs from iTunes to Audacity without a mic?
i want to put songs from itunes into audacity to make mixes and whatnot %26amp; im new to audacity. i dont have a mic. is it possible? if so, how?Can you transfer songs from iTunes to Audacity without a mic?
idkCan you transfer songs from iTunes to Audacity without a mic?
Two ways you can do it.
1: Record direct from the drive.
Set the input level in the dropdown window at the top right to "stereo mix" or "what you hear" (depends on soundcard)
You might need to adjust the recording level with the slider next to the input window.
Click record on Audacity then click play on iTunes.
Edit name and save.
2: Convert the iTunes format songs to mp3 or wav.
I think iTunes use the m4a file format so this app will convert them.
http://koyotstar.free.fr/indexEn.html
From then on just open the converted songs direct to Audacity.
If the iTunes songs do not allow conversion then I think method 1 is your option. Can you transfer songs from iTunes to Audacity without a mic?
Yes. In Audacity, find the Input tab (not sure where it is, haven't actually used the program, but it will be in Options or Preferences) and you should have a "Master", "Wave" or "Stereo Mix" Input, this will use your output as your input, causing any sound you play to be recorded when you record.lesbians lipstick

How do I to Audacity to make a vocals only song?
How would I go about making a reverse karaoke on Audacity?
Reverse karaoke meaning vocal only or at least close enough to it.How do I to Audacity to make a vocals only song?
Answer one - WRONG..
Answer two - WRONG.
Why are they wrong - because it can't be done.
It is possible to remove a vocal with varying success from a stereo file but it is not possible to remove the music to create an acapella (vocal only) track. Not even partially.
It's ONLY possible with the original multi-track studio recording.
As a side note if the vocal removal method was able to be reversed to remove the music the end result would be the vocals as well as the bass and drums and any other center panned music.
A program to do this does not exist simply because it's not worth the effort to create one.How do I to Audacity to make a vocals only song?

You have to export the project as an mp3 or m4a or wav or something itunes can read. An Audacity project file is just something that Audacity can handle, and it keeps all your layering and such intact, like a Photoshop .psd file.

Your about right just save the project and then you have to send thefollowing in a Zip file or compress it someway.
The audio file your working on
A folder ending with _Data
A file ending with .aup
That will about do it so when you send it to the other person Audacity will open it up seeing all the items in the project as you are sending it to them.
Please let me know if you have any problems or you could go over to http://forum.audacityteam.org/ they have the best of the best.

How do you put audacity files on youtube?
So, I downloaded audacity because I wanted to hear myself singing on youtube (shocking, right?), and I want to combine it with a picture of something to make a little video clip and upload it on yt.
How do I combine the two?How do you put audacity files on youtube?
The simplest way I can think of for you is to first record yourself with audacity. Save it as a wave or mp3 file format.
You can then use windows movie maker to import the file that you recorded into timeline track. Do the same for the picture as well, after doing so you will have both the picture and the file.

How to add space between clips in Audacity?
I am looking for a way to automatically add a certain amount of time between each audio clip (on the same track) in Audacity, like a gap. I would also like to know how to automatically delete the last second (or so) of each clip (on the same track) in Audacity. Please answer. How to add space between clips in Audacity?
It can't be done automatically - it has to be manual..
Version 1.3.11 has the ability to select the exact amount of silence.
Via the Generate menu:
Place cursor line / generate / silence.
Delete the last +/- second - normal cut procedure:
Highlight / Edit / Cut.
If that seems fiddly consider that it can take me 20 hours or more to compile 12 - 14 tracks for a cheermix type CD.

I've been using Audacity for well over a year now because everyone raves about it. I can't seem to get my recorded tracks at a good quality, at a studio quality, so am I doing something wrong? How Do You Get Audacity Tracks To Sound Professional?
You need better recording equipment. And of you're serious about making music, maybe you ought too look into a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) such as FL Studio (if you're a PC) or Logic (if you're a Mac), or ones that are cross platform like Ableton, Cubase, or Propellerhead's Reason. Many professional musicians use these to sequence music, and to be honest, the only thing I use Audacity for is pitch shifting since it has an OK algorithm for it.How Do You Get Audacity Tracks To Sound Professional?

How do I get I get a song from iTunes into Audacity?
I realized that Audacity wouldn't take a .cda file, so I burned it into iTunes. I then transferred the song from there to Audacity by left-clicking it, holding down Ctrl, and then dragging it into Audacity. But now, Audacity just has a high-pitched clipping that is only 0.072 of a second. How do I get I get a song from iTunes into Audacity?
Unfortunately, dear lady, all you've done is copied over the .cda file, which is just an CD Audio Track Shortcut. It's just the information that tells the player ... iTunes in your example ... that there's an audio track on the CD.
What you need to do is 'rip' the audio track from the CD to your hard drive in .mp3, .aif, .au, .ogg or .wav format. (.mp3 is a compressed format, so it takes up less room.)
You can do this by using Windows Media Player or one of a hundred other such programmes. (I've listed a download site for FairStars CD Ripper below. You might like to give that one a try. It's a free programme, so there's nothing to pay.)

How do I get rid of static noise on Audacity?
I'm trying to fix up Clair de Lune here, and during the song it goes really loud, causing a static sound. Anyway to get rid of that sound on Audacity? How do I get rid of static noise on Audacity?
In short - no.
Although the format of a file can affect the quality it does not apply in this case. (Audacity does not recognize the flac format.)
Whether recording direct to tape or digitally there is a limit to the level which can be recorded without distortion.
Classical music tends to have a much wider dynamic range than music recorded with airplay in mind such as rock, country etc.
You could also be referring to a band of that name, a song on a Madonna album or an artist by that name.
I checked Wiki.
If this distortion (asperity noise / clipping) only occurs during the loud passages it is now part of the audio and cannot be separated or removed.
If the waveform is normal until the loud passage/s and the upper and lower portions of the waveform are cut off straight and level in the loud passages (the waveform looks like a solid block) there is nothing you can do. The staticy, crackly sound can't be removed in the same way an individual instrument can't be removed.
The noise removal function will not be of any help. It is intended for constant low level noise such as from an air conditioner or fan.
The only remedy is to find another recording of the piece or if recording it yourself record it at a lower level but adjust the level at the loud section before recording the whole track. How do I get rid of static noise on Audacity?
It probably has something to do with the quality of the file. You should be working with a WAV or a FLAC, not an MP3, as MP3s are lossy and therefore low quality. If you can't find a higher quality version of the file, try using noise removal.

Removing all background noise is virtually impossible, you can tone it down though, Audacity has a good guide on this: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php?t鈥?/a>

How to make a ringtone with audacity?
I'm trying to take a 20 second piece of a song, import it into audacity, and then send it to my phone through email. My only problem is that when I save the 20 second sound clip it is a lot larger than I want it to be. I want it to be less than 1 mb but no matter what I try I can't change the file size. Is there any way to either compress the file with audacity or lessen the sound quality so it doesn't take up so much space? How to make a ringtone with audacity?
Make sure you're exporting the file as a .MP3 file. You do (File -%26gt; Export...). Then under save as type, select MP3 file. If you were using WAV or the uncompressed type, it would explain the big file size.
Hope this helps!
Have you tried exporting into an MP3 file?
